Help senior citizens learn digital literacy skills (COVID-friendly)

About

Overview

EPIK is a nonprofit focused on collaborative #UseTech4Good efforts.

Cyber-Seniors is a virtual/do-from-home service opportunity that enables students to help senior citizens with using computers and other digital tools. The program was designed originally for face-to-face mentoring, but has adapted to allow for all service opportunities to be done remotely during COVID.

During COVID, seniors have become even more isolated than ever, but technology can help them feel more connected -- if they know how to use it. Often it just takes someone with a little time and love to help them learn to navigate digital tools to connect with family, take care of life needs (banking, online shopping, telemedicine), and more.

As a trained Mentor, you can also help older adults sign up for the Cyber-Seniors service, which includes not only digital training opportunities, but online webinars and workshops.

For senior citizens who are not yet comfortable with technology, they can call toll-free at 844-217-3057, where volunteers can help senior citizens get started.

How to get involved

Your contact at EPIK Deliberate Digital will help you get started to receive free online training from Cyber-Seniors  -- OR you can go to their website directly at CyberSeniors.org/volunteers. Please report your hours to michelle@epik.org, as we are reporting volunteer hours back to UServeUtah, the state volunteerism organization. (You can report hours spent on training as well as direct service hours. You can even report hours spent watching the Cyber-Seniors Documentary. See more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56tzjVfcWAM or here: https://cyberseniorsdocumentary.com/

For more information about Cyber-Seniors, see CyberSeniors.org or watch this video created by youth in Utah who participated in a Cyber Seniors project a few years ago. (Be sure to watch to the end to see the formal video created about the project, to hear from some of the seniors who received help. https://bit.ly/3aK7qSC )

You can also watch this interview with one of the co-founders of Cyber-Seniors to hear how they have adapted their program to be COVID-friendly, and to hear the wide variety of ways senior citizens are receiving help and support through Cyber Seniors. https://bit.ly/36KEatq

Note: Cyber-Seniors is always looking for volunteers with language skills (Spanish, French, and others). So please let us know if you speak a language other than English!
