Responsibilities

The Special Events Volunteer will assist the Literacy Action team in planning, holding, and hosting special events. Volunteer assistance will aid the organization in keeping with its mission to increase public awareness of the organization.

 

·        Be punctual to all Literacy Action events

·        Assist in the set up and cleaning of Literacy Action events

·        Be able to speak intelligently about the organization, mission, and your role in the organization

·        Refer any media inquiries for specific Literacy Action’s information to the appropriate staff member

·        Register and direct participants, answer questions and maintain accurate records

·        Commit only to the physical activities within your ability

·        Perform other duties as assigned

 

Reports To

Volunteers are supervised by the Programs Manager and Literacy Action staff members.

 

Length of Appointment

Appointment will be solely based upon service at any specific event or activity.  

 

Time Commitment:

Time will vary however; volunteers usually commit to 3-4 hours at a time. Special events, include but are not limited to, Student Recognition Ceremonies, Open House Registration Days, annual gala, and golf tournament.                                             

 

Qualifications:

·        Volunteers must be a volunteer in good standing.

·        Volunteers must be reliable (have good shift attendance).

·        Volunteers must have good oral communication skills.

·        Volunteers must be able to remain calm under pressure.

·        Volunteers must be able to follow directions in a fast-paced and often changing environment.

·        Volunteers must be able to interact with a variety of individuals in culturally diverse environments

·        On some occasions, volunteers may be required to lift heavy items.

·        Volunteers must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol before and during the event.

·        Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with a variety of individuals in a culturally diverse environment.

·        Volunteers must be at least (14) years of age.

 

 

Training:

Volunteers must read The Volunteer Handbook and take part in an orientation conducted by the appropriate staff member. Volunteers will be given various types of documentation explaining Literacy Action’s policies; these documents should be returned to the Volunteer Coordinator signed and dated as a demonstration of the volunteer’s understanding and compliance with Literacy Action’s policies. Volunteers are encouraged to communicate with the Volunteer Coordinator at any step in the process with any comments, concerns, questions, etc. The Volunteer Coordinator reserves the right to interview any volunteer candidate. Training and instructions for the special event will either be delivered via email in advance or on the day of the training. Most special events will not require much training, so a day of training is appropriate

 

Selection:

All prospective members must submit an online application form and successfully complete a background check screening.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Personable and ability to work in a team.

 

Support Provided:

The Executive Director is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.
