About

This Spring The Austin Nature & Science Center will be offering three unique outdoor volunteer opportunities: building a split-rail fence, repainting safety railings, and refreshing exhibit ground-cover. Weather allowing we should have a pleasant morning of volunteering. All participants should plan to wear weather appropriate clothing including close-toed shoes, bring water, and be able to stand, bend and move around for about three hours of work.    Split-rail Fence: We will be replacing our Split-rail Fence along Nature Center Dr. This will involve pulling the old existing posts and replacing them with new posts and rails.   Repainting: We have two safety railings that need to be repainted to help beautify and maintain our site. The morning will consist of sanding and prepping the railings and painting them in our new color.   Exhibit groundcover: Our resident Greater Roadrunner, Skipper, needs some new pebble ground cover to improve his enclosure to his liking. We will be moving decomposed granite into and around his enclosure (including areas of trails).    All participants will receive a super cool T-shirt designed by Austin artists to show their park pride. Volunteers for all three projects should plan to meet at our main building. Parking is below the MoPac bridge on Stratford Dr. and participants can walk up the front entrance across the grounds to our main buildings. We will break into our groups from there, and all tools will be provided. We hope you join us for a fun morning on the preserve!
