Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park: Replant a reclaimed trail!

Saturday, March 4th, 2017 from 9:00am to 12:00pm (CT)

About

3/4/17 8:00 AM.

Hi everyone. Yes we are still on for today. A little bit of rain is actually good for our planting project.
See you soon.

Near the bridge over Walnut Creek, an unpaved trail has been rerouted away from a low spot that stays wet for weeks after a good rain. Now that bikers and hikers can stay out of the muck, we want to restore the old trail to what it was before it was a trail.

We will plant rootstock of prairie grasses, fall-blooming wildflowers, and other native plants. We will overseed with warm-season grasses. Before long, this mulched-over 2000-square-foot patch of dirt will be a pocket-sized patch of short- to midgrass prairie!

We will be working with hand tools and spading forks to loosen the soil and plant the rootstock. The species will depend on availability. We will also scatter seedballs containing mainly buffalo grass and blue grama grass. These grasses germinate in warm weather and grow through summer and into fall.

Bring a water bottle to refill.  Dress for the weather; closed-toed shoes.
