National Trails Day: Beautify Our Trails

Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 from 8:30am to 11:30am (CT)

About

We will do light maintenance along the trails in the Tar Branch watershed of Walnut Creek Park: • Cut the seedheads off Johnson grass. • Where we see stubs of cut branches, prune them away. (This is important for the safety of cyclists and hikers. Over time, stubs wear down to points—and can do serious harm if someone stumbles or falls into them.) • Block "social trails"—those wide spots through the brush that entice people to get off the trail and trample the beauty the rest of us are there to enjoy. • Make and scatter seedballs of native grasses and wildflowers. We will split into small groups and move along the trails. This will be a mix of a hike and a light work day.

Requirement Details
Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, protect yourself from the sun, and unless you absolutely know that you are immune to poison ivy, wear long sleeves or a blocking solution to protect yourself from incidental exposure. If you have a good-fitting pair of work gloves, bring them!
For the kiddos and others so inclined, we will find a shady spot to make seedballs. You may scatter what you make right away, or we can dry them and give them to the Austin Ridge Riders, who will scatter them throughout the park on one of their Sunday rides.
Perks
Take a hike and learn more about the trails along Tar Branch and the habitats they go through. We'll try to come up with some swag—contact Cliff if you have ideas!
Parking Details
Parking is available at the trailhead, across the park road from the trailhead, by the swimming pool, and farther down the park road, by the softball fields.
