Cold Weather Shelter

Open Opportunity

About

The Shelter serve the homeless as well as residents in the area who do not have heat in their homes. The Cold Weather Shelter opens 5 p.m. the night of the freeze, and remains open till guests leave at 7 a.m. following morning. We generally have between 30-45 guests.

The shelter determine opening by KSAT 12 news weather forecast.  With the forecast of freezing, we start sending out requests for volunteers and food by 12 noon that day.

We always need food and volunteers.  A group of 2 or 3 or an individual student is always welcome for each shift.

Shifts are 4:30 to 7, and 7-10:30 or cleaning up following morning, 7-9:30 a.m.

Main opportunities for volunteering:

  • Feeding guests a hot soup as they come in at 5.  Guests enjoy coming in and sitting down and eating/relaxing.
  • Help guests sign up for showers and laundry.

To be added to the list of available volunteers, text or call  Rebecca Baker:  210-379-6266.

Additionally, they are always looking for warm jackets, blankets, tube hats, socks, and hygiene items.
