The Equal Access to Education Service Corps program strives to understand the issues affecting access to education at all ages in the Fox Cities. Our mission is to provide opportunities for Lawrentians and the greater Fox Cities to work together in combatting matters that hinder access to education. Currently, we hold partnerships with Volunteers in Tutoring at Lawrence (VITAL), the Fox Valley Literacy Council, and the Appleton Area School District. My name is Molly Ruffing, and I am the Access to Education Programs Coordinator. In my role as the coordinator for this service area, I am responsible for creating and supporting all programming that ensures that the larger goal of access to education is ensured.
I wanted to share with you all two cool opportunities that you all would be interested in and are in high need of support:
1. VITAL Program: The VITAL Program matches K-12 grade students from Appleton schools with the greatest academic need to Lawrence student volunteer tutors. Individual and group tutors are required to meet with their tutees once a week for at least ½ hour to 1 hour. Volunteer hours are submitted to the tutor's academic record and can fulfill various organization requirements. Through individual tutor-tutee relationships, VITAL is committed to encouraging all students to persevere in their studies and have confidence in their work. The VITAL program also greatly benefits participating tutors as they learn to express clearly and communicate effectively with their tutees. Apply at go.lawrence.edu/vital
2. Fox Valley Literacy: Fox Valley Literacy provides free and confidential, one-to-one tutoring to adult learners who want to read better or learn English. These students are age 18 and older and come from diverse backgrounds. Over half of them 30 to 50 years old. To Apply and For more information: http://www.fvlc.net/index.html
This is my first year in the role, and I am so excited to learn alongside all of you! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns
