Becoming a volunteer tutor is a rewarding experience. If you like to read - and like people - you will be a great tutor! Our 14-hour training program is designed for anyone. You don't have to have teaching experience or know a foreign language.

Fox Valley Literacy incorporated as a nonprofit charitable 501(c)(3) corporation in Appleton, Wisconsin during International Literacy Month in September 1990 and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2020. The Outagamie Waupaca Library System, which supports all public libraries in the area, along with Appleton Public Library led the formation of the organization in an attempt to bring together other existing literacy programs into one coordinated effort.
Fox Valley Literacy provides free and confidential, one-to-one tutoring to adult learners who want to read better or learn English. These students are age 18 and older and come from diverse backgrounds. Over half of them 30 to 50 years old.
Fox Valley Literacy volunteers are passionate literacy advocates. Tutors make an initial commitment of one year and receive extensive training prior to being matched with an adult learner. Volunteers annually donate over 8,000 hours of service.
Over 12,000 adults in Outagamie County alone are believed to have low literacy skills. That's the number of people in a sold-out Timber Rattler's stadium . . . times two!
Illiteracy is closely linked to poverty, unemployment and health issues. Children of low-literate parents face a high risk of not being successful in school. Helping an adult learn to read can improve the situation of an entire family. Most adult learners seek our help so they can participate in their children's learning, obtain a GED or HSED, or improve their job skills so they can better support their families.
