GW AmeriCorps VISTA

About

The Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service and DC Public Schools (DCPS) collaborate on an AmeriCorps VISTA program. Our VISTA members come to DC from around the world to fight poverty by leveraging community partnerships and recruiting volunteers to increase opportunities and access in Title I schools across the district. VISTA Members who participate in the program are eligible for a number of benefits available including a monthly living allowance, healthcare, the choice between an education award or stipend upon completion of their term, etc.

Through this collaboration, we recruit and train up to 15 full-time, federally funded VISTA members who serve in DCPS schools as well as two divisions at DCPS Central Office: Office of Out of School Time and the Office of Family and Public Engagement. School-Community Liaison VISTAs build capacity by working directly with school personnel and community organizations as well as with GW faculty and students to cultivate partnerships, develop volunteer programs, and collaborate with the community to create sustainable solutions. Within DCPS Central Office our VISTAs work to create and maintain systems and curriculum informed by experience, research, and best practices.
