Bon Air Elementary

About

Our school is 20% English Language learners who speak mostly Spanish. We invite LAIS Spanish in the Community students to volunteer with elementary students who are learning English. The UR students will use their Spanish skills to bridge the gap to English and assist students in accessing/deepening the understanding of math, science and social studies in their classrooms. With younger children in kindergarten and first grade, volunteers will be helping with alphabet, letter sounds, vocabulary through games and stories while using Spanish.  UR students may also read picture books in Spanish to students to continue their cultural literacy. A volunteer just needs basic Spanish for younger children and intermediate Spanish for older students.

Students who like elementary children and are willing to initiate conversations with them are the ideal volunteers. Volunteers will receive a orientation from the ESL teacher and be given materials. In all volunteer situations, a teacher will be nearby for assistance.

Our school is located a short distance (15-20 min drive) from University of Richmond in Chesterfield County. Our school hours are 7:35 am - 2 pm. The best way to contact the ESL teacher (Lee Ann Newman) is through email.   lee_newman@ccpsnet.net   Our school year begins Sept. 3, 2019 although teachers will be at work the week before. It is helpful to indicate in your email your availability, transportation and what level Spanish you can speak.
