Texas Lassos

About

Texas Lassos is a spirit group and service organization at the University of Texas at Austin. Together, we strive to promote spirit, service, and social activities to all members while fostering friendship, leadership, and cooperation within our community. Founded in 1998 with only seven members, today Texas Lassos is home to over 150 active members and an accomplished group of alumni. As a whole, we are a group of diverse young people intent on contributing to the University and the Austin Community.

We're not the oldest, we're not the biggest, we're simply the best!

Service:
Lassos work hard to improve the UT campus and the city of Austin. We participate in service projects and volunteering for numerous charitable organizations and causes, including Austin Animal Center, Texas THON, Inside Books, Austin Marathon, SUREwalk, Outside the Box, Best Buddies, and many more! Active members are required to complete 12 hours of service a semester. We have numerous service opportunities available throughout the semester, including service mixers with other organizations on campus!

Spirit:
Texas Lassos are proud to be Longhorns and we support all UT athletics! Each semester, active members are required to attend six games of their choosing. We have tailgates with other male organizations for football and baseball. As Lassos, we play IM Softball and Volleyball as well as participate in events like OU Weekend and 40 Acres Fest. We also love supporting our fellow Lassos in their individual interests, by attending events like Acapella performances and dance competitions.

Social:
Lassos love to have fun! We have plenty of social events throughout the year that foster sisterhood among our fellow members, friendship with other organizations, and date events as well! Our events include Date Dash, Crush, Destination Unknown, Mixers, Boat Party, Lasso Thanksgiving, Crawfish Boil, Formals, Semi-formals, Mugdown and Shootout.

Philanthropy:

In the Fall of 2012, Texas Lassos adopted the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas (DSACT) as our organization's official philanthropy. Lassos works with DSACT through fundraising, events, workshops, and more. We host Dance Parties with DSACT members, Barnyard Bash as an annual fundraiser, and volunteer with DSACT at Buddy Walk and any events where they need our support in implementing their programming. All Lassos are required to complete a mandatory Disability Awareness Training.

Longhorns Against Drunk Driving:

LADD (Longhorns Against Drunk Driving) was founded by members of Texas Lassos after the loss of member Vanessa Whitford’s life. LADD was initially created to both spread awareness and provide resources to stop drinking and driving in honor of Vanessa. Today LADD works not only to prevent drinking and driving, but also to provide mental health resources, alcohol/drug safety initiatives, sober events, and recovery ally trainings. LADD has many official partners including LYFT, The Austin Sobering Center, The Steve Hicks School of Social Work, and Texas Athletics. LADD’s mission is to educate, advocate, and stand in solidarity with those who have lost lives to drinking and driving incidents, drug/alcohol use, addiction, or mental health. We strive to provide a safer environment for our students, peers, and community.
