College Tribe

About

College Tribe’s mission is to cultivate character, scholarship and social competence of 3rd to 8th grade boys living in Washington DC. Our mission is completely dedicated to the service of children. The organization was founded in 2007 by four African-American men who attended either high school or college together, rising from “at-risk” childhoods to achieve success. These men all had sons, which brought into sharp relief the difficulties of raising black boys. These men’s struggles and experiences thus served as the catalyst for creating College Tribe. For our first two years, we created mentor relationships between African-American men and high school youth in order to shepherd pathways to college and success in life. We quickly recognized that we needed to start at an earlier age to increase the pool of boys on the path to college. In 2009, we adjusted our target population to 3rd to 8th graders.

Based on the expertise of our mentors and the needs of our boys, College Tribe piloted a program to offer after-school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes in the 2010-2011 academic year. We started with robotics and added video game design the next school year. We then started our STEM summer camp in 2011. After finishing our pilot program in 2012, we saw a powerful symbiotic relationship between STEM and mentoring and decided to further refine our focus: black men mentoring black boys and creating STEM leaders. In ten years, College Tribe has grown from the four founders mentoring seven boys into over thirty volunteer mentors equipping over seventy boys annually for success in life through three programs: 1. College and career mentoring, 2. After-school STEM education and 3. Summer STEM.
