Staffing the emergency winter overflow shelter for locals without houses was a learning experience for sure. I was a little uneasy at first because the situation was unpredictable and I felt like no amount of information could totally prepare me for the multitude of things that can happen. As the night wore on, I got more comfortable, but did end up in a few interactions where I was uncertain of the best approach, and having to call an ambulance at the request of a man who couldn't get out of bed in the morning.

This experience really made me appreciate what I have, and also appreciate the work of the people who are making this shelter happen and preventing people from otherwise having nowhere else to go.
