It was a great experience at the preserve. Owen, the park ranger in charge of our activity was very knowledgeable and professional. I would certainly want to continue working at this location in the future.
I learned so much about everything from native grasses, prairie birds, forbs and much more. The park ranger/organizer, Owen, and some of the other volunteers were very knowledgeable and open to questions. We collected and sowed a variety of native grass species. Looking forward to more opportunities to visit and contribute to conservation efforts at the Louis René Barrera Indiangrass Wildlife Sanctuary.
Our task was completed Effective with little to no time wasted and we maximized our work to thefullest with the time we were given.
Wonderful introduction and presentation to this upcoming survey despite the technical issues! I really enjoyed the overview of sparrows and my questions were answered quickly. I think one of the suggestions I would make would be to change the presentation by listing out the names of the birds versus using banding codes which I think maybe confusing for beginner birders. Because this survey is going to be challenging and a lot of the identification seems to rely on flight patterns maybe next time you can include some videos of sparrows flushing and pointing out the differences in flushing patterns. Other than that, looking forward to the first survey!
super interesting experience - would totally
recommend!
Picked grass and flower seeds with Owen. Had a great time and learned.
The Park Ranger was very approachable and knowledgable about the Central Texas Plains and Native grasses! It was VERY easy to be socially distanced and the weather was great. I highly encourage others to volunteer with the park if they like to do either of the following:
Being outside
Learning about Central Texas Geography
Planting
Giving Back to the Community
Being solitary or social (options for both)
Exploring new places
Had a lot of fun!!
I was gratified to be out on the prairie again. The Indiangrass was going to seed, and was doing very well.
Helping to take the baby steps towards returning this small piece of land back to a semblance of it's former self.
