Along with fellow ASCE and AEI members, we mulched newly planted trees around the softball fields at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. Had an enjoyable experience, and made some new friends and connections with wise junior and senior level engineering students. As we mulched I was able to ask them what their first years as a engineering student was like and received some valuable advice, along side the fact of improving growth rate of the newly planted trees. Definitely an event that a student can make as an annual volunteer experience.
very fun and well organized, even got free lunch. definitely going back
The feeling you obtain after you make a positive change has no price. This service event was a great opportunity for me to help the Austin community. I had done service events in my hometown, but it was my first time doing it on Austin. This lead me to realize that the need of service and helping hands is always needed everywhere. By helping others one has the opportunity to unify with others and make a commitment to work together to achieve the same goal "to make this world much better". Our actions might seem little, but with that seed of change we planted, we can motivate and influence other to take the same initiative we did. Our community needs us, so let's start making the change now!
Cleaning up this creek was definitely a rewarding experience because I personally tend to forget how much harm we can do to the environment. I used to be in charge of an environmental club in middle school, and I even volunteered at the Houston Arboretum several times to help clear up paths and pick up trash. Whenever I volunteer in an outdoor setting, I learn to appreciate the environment more and more. I am glad I had the chance to do it under the Austin Parks Foundation and Texas Conservation Corporation because they organized the event thoroughly and had everything from water to gloves to help us throughout the shift.
I loved being able to help preserve nature. I felt like I made a difference, and assisted the community as well as the environment.
It was really good
It was so much fun making the trail ways easier for bikers and walkers. I got to talk to so many interesting people and had a great time.
I loved volnteering here. I'm not one to enjoy the outdoors, but it was a beautiful day and the view was superb. I enjoyed working with a great group of people.
I wish I knew to bring bug spray and a water bottle.
As we worked, people on the trail stopped to thank us for the work we did. It felt good to see we did something that made a difference!
