1. Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
The presentation that was most impactful to me was delivered by a GW alumni and explored the correlation between the treatment of mental disabilities in children with the presence of a strong support system. This was very impactful as my mom was the principal of an elementary school for kids with Cerebral Palsy, and I was heavily active in her work.
Question #2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new you learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended a session wherein two GW-based student organizations were introduced and explained. This truly taught me about community engaged scholarship because it demonstrated how to identify a significant issue and implement civility to improve the wellbeing of their community. The specific organization involved collecting and redistributing foods that were intended for waste in restaurants, while unfortunately still edible and of high quality in most cases.
Question #1 Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
I found the showcase presentation of the documentary on the transgender sex worker most impactful. It stressed the hardships and struggles of the job, and expressed moving stories about experiences with discrimination. This documentary changed my perspective and shed some light on what a lifestyle like hers is like. Discrimination can take place anywhere and in any workplace. What may seem small can have huge, longlasting effects on people, just like it did on her. At the end of the presentation, the creator of the documentary informed us about the transgender woman's GoFundMe page and gave us an opportunity to make a change in her life - which I found especially impactful.

Question #2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new you learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended the session that focused on Business. What I found most interesting was the stress they placed on the importance of community service for the individual volunteering - not just for the community. While helping the community, one is also helping themselves to open their minds and grow as a person. I learned that community engagement can be an extremely helpful means of expanding one's field of work and life.

The SMPA presentations were the most impactful to me. This was mainly due to the fact that it raised awareness on topics not generally discussed. The one that stood out to me the most was the one regarding the transgender woman. Seeing the presentation, it opened my eyes to the harsh realities of the world for people of different orientation.

2. Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new you learned about community engaged scholarship?

I attended the session in which two GW alumni students discussed the organizations they have opened up. One of the alumni told us about how the organization he created provides food at a discounted rate to those who cannot afford regular prices. They do this by using the leftover food from restaurants. Through this session, I learned that it is possible to open up a nonprofit organization as for me I always thought that it was something very rare. Moreover, it created a sense of motivation for me to be able to give back to the community one day just like the alumni.

I really enjoyed the showcase about Martha's Table. Having volunteered at SOME, it was interesting to see how two similar organizations differed. I also briefly talked to a different show case about their invention of a CPR device for children which was also super interesting.
#2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended the session where two GW students discussed their organizations. I loved hearing about the one called Last Call for Food. Living in a city there are so many restaurants around us and because of that I can't even imagine the amount of waste these restaurants produce. This organization attempts to combat that and the session proved that anyone can create an organization that benefits others.

For me, the SMPA presentations struck me the hardest. Each one that we watched accomplished its purpose of bringing awareness of its specific topic to the viewer. The that told the story of the transgender sex worker was difficult to watch but raised my awareness to circumstances of other’s lives many of us would have never thought possible.

#2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended the Businesses in the community session and listened to the presenters talk about the impact that community-serving businesses can provide.  I learned how asset-based management can be a strong strategy for sustainable community-driven development; allowing businesses to thrive and build on a companies assets, not concentrate on their needs. This is an important message to spread to the business leaders of tomorrow as the next generation will be the ones supporting future philanthropy and other global issues.

The most impactful presentation to me is the SMPA documentaries. All three of the documentaries were very impressive. The third documentary is about a transgender woman who is also a sex worker, it really impressed me because she really had a hard time to live and also I saw the hopelessness in her eyes through the video.
#2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended the presentation in the continental ballroom and learned that there are a lot of non-profit organizations that are willing to help the community be better. They try to help as many people as they can and advocate others to join them and helping people. Become a volunteer not only help the people we helped but also help ourselves become more healthy.
Question #1 Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why? The most impactful and interesting showcase was definitely Martha's Table just because they had much different experiences than I did, they interacted a lot more with the community and I loved to hear about how they felt the program was more about educating the community on eating healthier rather than providing fresh and healthy food to the individuals in the community.
Question #2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new you learned about community engaged scholarship? I attended the Business geared session and it was interesting how much they talked about not only the service impacting the community but how it helps the volunteer grow as a person and help them in furthering their work through different service opportunities.
1. The presentation that was most impactful to me was the GW Composting. This group resonated with me because their service was actually relatively simple and does not require that much effort but goes a long way in impacting our waste. Their team meets every Friday from 8am to 12pm to collect compostable materials from GW students and staff. Then, they aid in effectively turning all the material into compost. This means that there is less waste on campus and those that contribute are helping plant growth.
2. I attended the presentation where two students at GW discussed their businesses. One was called Last Call For Food which partnered with restaurants to sell all leftover meals at the end of the day for a low price. The other was a consulting firm that helped businesses be engaged in the community. I learned that it is never too early to start a business or project, and with the help of other organizations who want to contribute to the community you can get very far.
Question #1
The most impactful showcase presentation to me was for A Wider Circle. I thought the depth that this organization went in to help those in poverty and experiencing homelessness was a really beneficial way to support the community. This organization helps provide basic necessities for those who otherwise couldn't afford them and career development by aiding with resumes and interviews. These basic necessities go beyond what we typically view to include items needed for a household such as a dresser or dishes.
Question #2
I attended the session in which we learned about two organizations created by GW students. The first was a program called Last Call for Food and it helps provide meals at a discounted cost to avoid restaurants from wasting food. This was really amazing to me because it helps solve both the issue of food insecurity and food waste. The second was a non-profit consulting organization that gave people the opportunity to work with big consulting firms, many of which end in jobs from those firms.
Q1: The most impactful showcase presentation was "Being Other Oriented at Martha's Table" because it was interesting to learn how service could even be in a retail shop, which I never knew was an option. I thought it was eye opening to learn about the values associated with doing service in retail such as empathy, adaptability, and being ethical. I got to learn about how how retail service is different from food service, because in providing clothes to those in need that is something that can be used for a long time rather than food that goes away once it is consumed. It is the concept of temporary satisfaction that goes with food service.
Q2: I attended the session on Sustainability, and learned about how new entrepreneurship ventures can be about community engagement. I saw how current GW seniors were able to bring to life their ideas and are now making an impact on the current community in DC, whether it be through providing students with food or consulting services to non profit companies. I learned community engagement can involved something that you love to do rather than a glorified task.
