    Community Day in the Forest

There were so many helpers and not enough leaders to guide them clearly in the ways that would be most effective in the allotted time. People planting were not given clear direction in plant placement (eg, a mock-up of what goes where and a diagram of the best way to remove mulch, plant, and re-cover) weeding not given clear instruction in what to keep planted vs remove (images of plants to keep and grasses and other weeds to remove so people didn’t erroneously remove what should remain), how wide to build berms with a sketch, how level to make paths before spending manpower to level at the wrong height only to add more mulch to need smoothing again, what each type of mulch was used for (many shoveling mulch told people we were using cedar mulch first and then would use hardwood mulch, when in reality, they were for two different purposes), etc. Encouragement to have youth take a 5-min break for water/rest hourly would be good to implement.
Tools, gloves, mulch, plants, and other supplies were great and abundant. Leaders were friendly. Area is beautiful, and it was a wonderful way to enjoy a fantastic day in Austin.

    Deep Eddy Deep Clean

2 of my kids and I helped at the IT’s My Park Day event at Deep Eddy and Eilers Park. We had a great time! The weather was perfect, and we thought it was a great way to spend the morning and make a difference for the preservation of this Austin landmark for future generations of Austinites.
