A somber, yet celebratory event dedicating the Renaming of the Louis Rene` Barrera IndianGrass Wildlife Preserve and new signage. Council Member Leslie Poole presented the sign dedication and designated October 20, 2019 Louis Rene` Barrera Day. Many family, friends, co-workers and volunteers spoke about the impacts Rene` had on them and on the Austin Community and it's Nature Preserves.
Several different volunteer opportunities were available, and I chose seed gathering and iNaturalist Observations.
A fine memorial work day!
Rene` would have been proud at the turnout.
He will be missed !
His Infectious Enthusiasm will be missed !
Supervised the spreading of 40 cubic yards, was assisted by 2 VERY helpful FOBP members, Dave S. and Bradley.
We had some of the best distribution of mulch in many years (well over 100 trees)! Many root collars were cleared and many trees finally got much out to their drip lines!
Thanks to the over 80 volunteers that showed up, ready to work, to make their (our) park a better place!
As the mulching leader...
Fewer tools and fewer volunteers this time around. But those that came did an amazing job of spreading the 2 large piles of mulch, clearing many root collars that were in desperate need and even had the Daisy and Girl Scouts put out 98 pin flags marking as many ant hives around the park.
A Successful Fall IMPD 2018 at Brentwood Park!
Having led the mulching efforts, I feel we were successful. We spread the 18CY of mulch in 1:20. The group moved on to root collar clearing, and did a great job on a lot of trees that really needed it. There were still plenty of trees that could have been mulched.
I would say that we should order 36cy (2 truck loads) of mulch each IMPD. We have consistently had good numbers of volunteers and finished early. We did that in the fall and we finished by 11:30am.
More mulch and less volunteers than expected. We had hoped for the extra mulch and we actually received it - yea! The volunteers that did show up did a great job on the distribution and spreading of the mulch in very short time frame - WOW & Kudos to them!
I need to be more firm and assertive in the initial gathering of all the mulching volunteers, to lay out the methods, the plans and expectations. They scattered too far and wide too quickly to regather them.
Was introduced to a nature preserve that is partially open to the public. I will be back for seasonal viewings.
