Texas Mission of Mercy was my first volunteer experience where I got a good look at the field of dentistry. It was worth waking up at 5 in the morning and I would do it again. I was so happy being a part of this event and felt as though it brought me closer to my dream of being a dentist.
I worked in the Vitals section, where patients come in and are assessed before seeing a doctor who approves or disapproves their ability to see the dentist today. I learned to take blood pressure and record patient information in charts. One has many considerations to think through before providing dental work. Dentists use certain sedatives and these are only safe when the patient has a blood pressure in a healthy range.
In addition, this community service event gave me a deep appreciation for being bilingual. I was one of two who could speak fluently in spanish, and was sent all of the spanish speaker patients who others had difficulty speaking to. It gave me an opportunity to practice my interpersonal skills and think about how I will one day interact with my own patients. It was great to reflect on this. I hope to attend again and volunteer at the treatment floor.
