    FYI: For the Kids

This event introduced three non-profit organizations that help children in Northwest Arkansas. The organizations were Passionate About Learning (PAL), Champion for Kids, and Arkansas Dance Marathon. The organization that I had not heard about before and caught my interest was Champion for Kids which focuses on helping homeless youth. I plan to attend their upcoming event of Books Bears and Blankets and through this event I learned how much I do not realize about the community I grow up in.

    Envisioning Justice

Dr. Yajara Padilla is currently an Associate Professor of English and Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Arkansas and spoke today as part of the Envisioning Justice Lecture Series. Throughout the Zoom call Dr. Padilla spoke upon the issues surrounding Latinx communities but focused on the most recent issues caused by the Zero Tolerance Policy. Through explaining the history that Latinx community has gone through because of policies and institutionalized racism, I was able to relate and take in her message on the importance of staying informed and being open to share my voice as a Latinx student.

This lecture held Angel Davis as the speaker. Angela Davis is a political activist, author, and pushes the message of not just social for African Americans but for all. Throughout the lecture Angela pushed the importance of Black History Month she explained how much this month shows the struggle of all people no matter what their background was. She explained the importance of fighting and resistance, but also the importance of unity. Unity between not just people of the same race but people of different backgrounds as well. Angela explained how higher education and educational institutions have the responsibility of teaching people to embrace differences because "education and liberation go hand and hand". Angela Davis explained her story but also other peoples stories to allow me as an individual to realize that if others fought in rougher conditions, I could continue to fight as well.
