The Multicultural Refugee Coalition provides a Resource day on the first Saturday of each month. Families receive many resources including free childcare, citizenship test prep, and English practice. In addition, companies such as Google, HEB, and Indeed provide representatives from the Austin area to aid refugees in the job application process. From my own personal experience, I met many people from a variety of backgrounds who shared their stories with me as well as some delicious home-made food! I tried a rice dish called Biryani for the first time and loved it!

MRC hosts an English as a second language class right before a sewing class for women of all ages. You don't need any experience as a teacher, you just need an open mind and patience. This particular day we worked on long and short vowels in the beginner ESL class. I left the workshop with the satisfaction of meeting a new friend from Afganistan whom I hope to see again in the future sessions.
The New Leaf agriculture project was created through the Multicultural Refugee Coalition in partnership with Lanier High Schools Future Farmers of America program. This project offers space for refugees to practice cultivating their own garden alongside volunteers from the community.
Fun and friendly atmosphere. Helped prep around 3,000 meals for the community! I look forward to volunteering at the new location.
Worked on quite possibly the most difficult bike maintenance task and... succeeded! The shop leaders were very encouraging and informative. Truing a wheel only took a few hours of patience and determination. I now know the difference between lateral and radial truing! YBP is a great place to practice and enhance your maintenance skills while being surrounded by supportive community members.
Very inspiring to experience so much love and knowledge on only a small plot of land thats surrounded by parking lots and construction sites
I wish I had known about this garden sooner! I wish it was talked about at orientation! The people are knowledgable, fun, and charismatic. I will be going back to learn more as often as I can. (:
Event materials went by quickly. But still had the opportunity to bond with other ULN students/staff.
Signed up to work with early learners program but instead helped with a birthday party. Staff was helpful and friendly. Birthday party went smoothly. We helped prepare materials for upcoming events. Very relaxed service opportunity but fun non the less.
Always love volunteering at local events. This was my second year face painting and the families were fun and friendly.
Thanks so much for helping out and for being flexible about your placement! Best, Dana
