Raymond @ Martha’s Table, 1474 Columbia Rd NW

Traveled to Martha’s Table for “tidy-up”. We cleaned the day’s dishes, as well as put away all pots and pans from the day’s cooking. We also cleaned up the yard where kids play throughout the day.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service & Leadership 2020

The GW Men’s Rowing Team travelled to Savoy Elementary school. We painted two stories of hallways white, as the hallways had too much color before. The school believes one color can calm the kids down more, and help them focus on their studies.

Spring 2019 Nashman Center Symposium on Community Engaged Scholarship

The showcase presentation most impactful to me was in room 302, and it involved multiple students showing us their videos from their service learning courses. The service learning they did was with a Spanish class, and they worked in the community with Spanish speaking individuals. This was most impactful to me as I have been taking Spanish for many years, and I come from a neighborhood with many immigrants from Spanish speaking countries, who maybe are at a disadvantage of resources because they do not know English well. It was great to see the Spanish community being benefited here in D.C. by enthusiastic students.
From 2:30-3:30, I attended the session in 302 which was a video presentation as opposed to a poster board presentation. Something new I learned about community engaged scholarship is that It can be applied to a specific course subject, such as how the Spanish service learning courses helped Spanish communities in D.C. I had a great time at the symposium.

Men's Rowing

I volunteered for the 2019 GW Invitational, and spent 7 hours timing races and helping the races go smoothly. We arrived at 6am and set up the boat launches with gas and life jackets, then spent 7 hours timing races and reporting the times back. It was a great time, and it was a rewarding feeling knowing we did our part to ensure that the races could occur smoothly.

SOME (So Others Might Eat)

Today we went to So Others Might Eat, and assisted in their lunch shift. We helped serve lunch, pour coffee and milk, and clean up. Additionally, we chatted with those receiving food and gave smiles. Overall there were great attitudes and people at the location, and it was a great experience to talk to people going through tough times.

Raymond @ Special Olympics DC Polar Plunge

We traveled to Catholic University to watch our coaches and captain jump in the pool to support the Special Olympics. It was a great time watching our coaches do cannonballs into a cold tub, and it was for a great cause.

We completed our sexual education and officially graduated as Grassroots coaches. We met with a principal, and PE teacher from local schools and discussed how to effectively coach young students on sexual health. This session of community was extremely beneficial to directly talk to teachers and an assistant principal on how to do future teaching in the best way possibly. I am very excited to continue working with Grassroots throughout the semester!
