As it was my first time doing actual service with Miriam's Kitchen, I had a really great time meeting the other volunteers. As we were working with meat, it was definitely outside of my comfort zone. I assisted with meal prep for the next day's dinner by chopping meat and fruits.
It was really interesting to learn about Miriam's Kitchen and its powerful mission of reducing chronic homelessness. Their initiatives reach a variety of struggling homeless populations within the DC region and have successfully provided them with nutritious meals and access to case managers. As mentioned in the orientation, the program only starts with food but hopes to extend beyond just that and play an active role in alleviating threats to persistent homelessness. Miriam's Kitchen also offers an art studio program.
