Bryker Woods Elementary School Urban Forest Grant Planting Day!

The leaders and fellow volunteers at Bryker Woods were really welcoming and friendly. This created an environment where you really wanted to put your best foot forward and help them out as much as possible. During these two hours we disposed of trash, including old desks and other types of furniture. I also helped make a brick paver walkway. Helping with the walkway was so rewarding after seeing the end product. I am glad I was able to help them out.

Hot Science, Cools Talks was an event by the Environmental Science Institute for K -12 students that attend public schools in Austin, Texas. In this event, top STEM researchers from UT can talk about their research to young students. Before the talk, student organizations are allowed to table and provide students with an activity that engages, and teaches them about STEM fields. I helped table for Pi Sigma Pi Minority Academic Engineering Society. Our activity involved designing a rocket out of paper, straws and balloons. Overall it was a great time and I enjoyed watching the kids' excitement as their rocket worked.

I volunteered for ExploreUT (definitely my favorite event to volunteer at) with the organization I am an officer in, Pi Sigma Pi. At RLM, We held an activity called "Twirling with the Wind" in which kids got to design their own anemometer with pencils and plastic cups, and, with our help, test it. Some of the older kids also got to calculate the speed of the air produced by small fans we placed around the room.

Longhorn Engineering is a free event sponsored by Equal Opportunity In Engineering geared to 12th graders interested in engineering but wanting to learn more about each major within engineering. As a volunteer, I interacted with over 75 students and let them know a little more about Architectural Engineering, which is a relatively new type of engineering degree and not many high school students are aware of it. We had an activity in which we gave the students around 15 minutes to design a suspension bridge with straws and strings.

I volunteered at the Equal Opportunity Engineering Guide Right event. This event is for minority students who have been admitted to the Cockrell School of Engineering. We show them around campus and answer any questions they might have about engineering and life in general here at The University of Texas.

I volunteered as a back up timer for the Hall of Fame Invitational. As a person who really wants to get better at swimming it was an amazing experience getting to see first hand how these outstanding athletes perform in such a competitive setting.
