My volunteer time at Longhorn Halloween with my spirit group Texas Fuego, was time well spent. As Vice President of the spirit group I was in charge of helping the community service chair set up for the event. The event was for the kids, and each organization had a booth where we performed different activities for the kids. Our booth had face painting, and we drew different Halloween figures on the kids faces from ghosts, to pumpkins, to butterflies. After the event, we helped take down and clean up the booth.

I volunteered with Keep Austin Beautiful with my spirit group, Texas Fuego. Before the actual day, I had to meet up with the community service chair of our organization, and go to east Austin to pick up paint brushes, paint, and paint rollers -- we were cleaning up graffiti in Austin. The hauling of the paint to our cars was actually the hardest part. The paint was in big gray industrial sized buckets that we weren't expecting. The fun part was cleaning up the graffiti. We were assigned a discreet part of east Austin that was ridden with graffiti drawings by a railroad track. We painted over the graffiti, and it was a fun time -- except when the cops shut us down. Apparently, it was too dangerous to be so close to the train tracks and we were told to go home, and that other people would clean up that area of Austin. Overall, the experience was great, aside from the cop situation.

Volunteering for SXSW for the interactive panels crew on March 11 was overall a great experience. My goal was to volunteer for the entirety of SXSW however spring break and home came in the way. I arrived a little before 8am, picked up my shirt at ACC and headed towards the speaker ready room of the Hilton which was my scheduled location. I scanned badges and confirmed attendees had a specific type of badge before entering the room. After that I had to let the panel speakers know how much time they had in their presentation left. I was assigned to help with line control for the next few panels as it got a little hectic. Overall this was a great experience and my first time at SXSW. Aresha the group leader was very helpful in helping the day run smoothly and helped all volunteers when they needed help. I recommend SXSW for all ULN students.

The road share cycle ride benefiting the special Olympics was a great place to volunteer. I arrived at 5:30am and helped set up the food station for the cycle riders. I prepped food for about 1 hour and then was assigned to distribute the turn signs for the cyclists along the 20, 40, and 60 mile paths. While doing this I was assigned with the Manor county sheriff's, and drove around in the police van, while putting the turning signs along the road. After this very long process, I prepped lunched for the cyclists and volunteers and helped serve the food. The last thing I did was help clean up, after the cyclists had returned from their bike ride. I put away coolers, and returned unused food items to their proper truck. Overall this was a great experience and Courtney was a great group leader that was able to guide the volunteers to success. I recommend this experience to all ULN members, along with any UT students who would also like to participate.

    UT Concho Community Garden

Volunteering at the garden was quite a different experience. I had never gardened before but the group leaders made it easy to contribute to the gardening. I mulched many plants, and then proceeded to clean up trash around the garden with my group. Good experience, I felt one with nature. I was a nature goddess for 2 hours. Go plants.

    Carlos @ Longhorn Run

Volunteered for the longhorn run on behalf of ULN on 4/11/15. Pretty great experience considering how early I had to get up! Seeing how everything was being set up and how many people were helping motivated me to help others, and to keep a steady track on what I was doing. I filled up hundreds of water bottles for the runners, and helped transport tables, and banners as well as helped set up food tables. I also received a cool Nike volunteer shirt, so that's definitely a plus!

2014 Austin Trail of Lights Volunteer Opportunities!

Second time volunteering this week, and it was even better than the first time! Stacy did a great job communicating with all of the volunteers, and it was a lot more organized than last the first time I volunteered, which was great. I enjoyed helping in santa's workshop, and seeing the smiling faces on not only the kids, but also the parents. Great experience.

2014 Austin Trail of Lights Volunteer Opportunities!

It was nice being a trail guide and answering questions for lost people. I even reunited a lost parent and her son. A bit unorganized in the beginning, but they handled all of the volunteers really well.
