    St. David's Medical Center

Jeffrey Xia (JX2432): I volunteered every Sunday from 10am to 1pm. I loved volunteering for St. David's. Interacting with the patients was fulfilling, and being able to give even just 5 minutes of time to the patients was gratifying. My duties included discharging patients, delivering various items, and assisting nurses in various tasks. I will continue volunteering for St. David's for the rest of my time as an undergraduate at UT.

I mentored researcheres on protein purification for the Virtual Drug Screening lab of the Freshman Research Initiative. It was a valuable experience. I gained more experience in teaching others new material, cultivated collaboration skills, and encouraged analytical thinking.

My supervisor in the lab is Dr. Josh Beckham. His email is josh.beckham@austin.utexas.edu

ULN End of the Year Community Service Holiday Event

I helped assemble bags of toiletries to give out to the homeless. The event was fun since I was able to meet new people from all the cohorts. The event was schedules for three hours but was already finished in one hour.

Nice people and lots of hard work. I helped with moving mulch to the back area, sanding down various objects (5 shelves, outdoor platform, log cabin floor), and wood stained some of those objects. Experience and effort was worth it to produce a nicer environement for the kids.

Jeffrey @ Freshman Research Initiative Virtual Drug Screening

I volunteered cleaning up the lab for the Freshman Research Initiative Virtual Drug Screening lab. My responsibilities were to remove 2+ year old chemicals and wash the bottles, clean up the computer desktop icons, fill up the alconox bottles with 10g/L alconox, and fill up the ethanol bottles with 70% ethanol by volume. I enjoyed cleaning the lab. It was fun cleaning with the other researchers. Cleaning the lab is necessary for lab safety and boosting efficiency.

I volunteered for the Barbara Jordan Media Awards event at San Jacinto Residential Hall Multipurpose Room. I helped iron out the backdrop and directed guests from the parking garage to the room. All the guests made it to the tables efficiently. I gave extra directions to the ramps and elevators for people who are handicapped. The person to contact to verify hours is with the ULN intern, Rosemary Cantu at rosemary.cantu@utexas.edu. However, the coordinator of the event and volunteers was Yvonne Loya.

I volunteered for the annual Power for Parkinson's banquet/gathering. In this even, I helped set up tables, chairs, and assisted people who needed help getting food. I also helped clean up afterwards. The event was lots of fun because even though the guests had Parkinson's, they were all happy and excited to show that they are fighting their neurological disease. I volunteered through Asian Premed Association and Andrew Ngo is the main contact. His email is apa.philanthropicvp@gmail.com

Today, I volunteered at the Rock your Camo 5K run at Camp Mabry. Volunteering started at 6:30AM. I helped set up tables, tents, decorations, and helped vendors/sponsors get set up with their showcase. It was below 32 degrees the entire morning and constantly sprinkled precipitation. Though the event was difficult due to weather conditions, the event was rewarding due to all the appreciation from the people. I volunteered through Asian Premed Association and the person to contact is vice president Andrew Ngo. He can be reached at apa.philanthropicvp@gmail.com
